Special Projects

The Special Projects Engineering Team provides lifecycle support for observational systems funded entirely by the NWS, including the FAA Terminal Doppler Weather Radar (TDWR) Supplemental Product Generator (SPG) and the NOAA Profiler Network (NPN). Specific work areas include:

  • Oversight of the full software development process for SPG and NPN, in conjunction with various other ROC branches and teams.

  • Applying security patches and upgrading application and operating system software in accordance with the relevant System Security Plan (SSP).

  • Collection and processing of feedback from NWS field offices to ensure that system modifications are in line with field requirements.

  • For NPN, on-site depot-level radar repairs and RF performance characterization in Alaska.

  • Replacement of IT hardware for routine obsolescence, in accordance with the eight year system modification plans.

  • Formulation and execution of budget packages for all facets of the NPN and SPG program, ranging from IT hardware and software to telecommunications services to travel.

  • Generating and processing Configuration Change Requests (CCRs) and working the resulting Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs) to ensure all changes are recorded in the system baseline.

More detailed project information can be found on the NPN and SPG pages.
